We are so caught up with the everyday like these:

“Don’t forget we have braces in the afternoon.”

“It’s going to be cold and rainy this morning, take your sweater and your umbrella.”

“What do you mean you don’t want a sweater?!”

“Where is the umbrella?”

“You left it at school?! What else have you left at school?”

“Your lunchbox?! Then whose lunchbox is this?”

That we don’t realize how quickly time passes.

We feel as if we paddle in place, tackling one sport event, one dental emergency, one sprained ankle, until the birthdays speed by: 5, 8, 10, 12, 17, 21…

Just as we get used to one phase, another change (or puberty?) hits us like a ton of bricks.

Then it’s a friend crisis. Then it’s a drama. Oh, the drama. Arguments like: “You can’t tell me what to do!” or: “Why do you have to ruin everything?!” pepper our days, keeping us busy.

Then suddenly, they don’t need us as much. We get a passing hello, or bye and they are off to college. We wait for the phone calls or texts, hoping to get a glimpse into their lives, praying we raised them right.

Oh, how time flies!
