I’ve never forgotten the day I made the mistake of driving my son to his karate lesson instead of walking.

It started out as any other Monday, 6 o’clock in the evening – we were late. Less than five minutes before departure the karate belt was nowhere to be found. Then it was the karate bag, containing gloves and protection gear that was lost. Then my son tried to leave the house in slippers. Then I couldn’t find my purse. You get the picture. As I said, it was nothing out of the ordinary.

Instead of sprinting through a nice park and straight into the town center, I decided to jump into the car and make the five-minute drive so we could arrive “on time” aka fashionably late.

Easy, right?

No! It was a horrible decision that I came to regret almost immediately.

You see, the studio was near a four-way, stop sign controlled, intersection. As it turned out, we weren’t the only ones “on time.” There was already a six-car traffic jam, dominated by minivans that blocked us from turning right into the narrow and small parking lot in front of the studio.

So we waited for the traffic to clear up.

And waited.

And waited.

The second mini van pulled away from double parking or simply blocking an empty spot, three others showed up seemingly out of nowhere to take its place.

As if that wasn’t enough, just when there was room, the cars on our left and right managed to execute a brilliantly timed California stop, aka rolling stop, that somehow blocked us from making more than an inch of headway.

It was surreal. Cars were flying by us, ignorant of the pedestrians and any traffic signs. Yelling and shaking a fist at the drivers didn’t seem to help our situation much so I resorted to praying.

I closed my eyes and murmured reverently, “Please dear Lord let me make this right turn without killing anyone. Please dear Lord…”

It was difficult to focus on my prayer from all the honking, blasting from behind us, but I was nothing if not dedicated.

And lo and behold a spot opened up.

I hit my turning signal again, stepped onto the gas and we grew wings. Well, not really, but we made it and I didn’t kill anyone in the process. I chalked that up in the win column.
